Officials Information

Parent volunteers are the backbone of organizing and executing the races our children enjoy. It’s also a good way to stay warm and meet some new friends.

Here is some information about ski racing officials programs for the 2009/2010 season.

It is strongly encouraged and perhaps a legal requirement, that all volunteers “inside the fence” at a Nancy Greene, Regional or Provincial race have completed the Alpine Canada Level 1 officials course as a minimum.

The club has several experienced parent officials who provide mentoring to those new to ski racing or those wishing to develop their skills further for taking on more senior roles. Here is a course breakdown:

Level 1 is a ½ day course that introduces parent volunteers to the basics of officiating. For example, race organization – roles and responsibilities, basic information on the various disciplines (SL, GS etc), course set - maintenance and gate judging. On completion, you’ll have a basic understanding of what it takes to set up and successfully run a ski race. Level 1 course(s) will be held at Snow Valley and the date(s) will be communicated closer to ski season. Please talk to your parent coordinator about attending. The Level 1 manual can be found on the Alpine Canada web site here.

Level 2 is a one day course that builds on the Level 1 course and experience gained while volunteering. The purpose is to provide the skills to take on “chief” positions. There are suggested prerequisites as outlined in  section 3-4 of the Level 2 manual that can be found here. The Level 2 Course will be held Saturday October 24 at the Sport Alberta Percy Page building, 118th Ave and St. Albert Trail.  To register for this course, please complete the Officials Certification Registration Document (doc) (pdf) and email it to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Level 3 is a 2 day course which builds upon the knowledge and experience gained by Level 2 officials. The prerequisites are more extensive, specific and can be found in the Level 3 manual prerequisites section in the linked here. Interested candidates must currently hold a level 2 certification and need to provide a resume of their on-hill experience which will be reviewed by the course conductor. The level 3 course is planned for October 10/11 at the Sport Alberta Percy Page building, 118th Ave and St.Albert Trail.  To register for this course, please refer to the prerequisites required for Level 3, complete a resume of your experience, the Officials certification registration document (doc) (pdf) and email it to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. The level 3 manual contains pre-course work and candidates are encouraged to download and review this material.

Senior Officials Update is a one day seminar for Level 2 and higher officials. It is a requirement that an update be attended every 2 years to retain accreditation. The Update will be held November 8th at the Sport Alberta Percy Page building, 118th Ave and St.Albert Trail.  To register for this update, please email  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Race Administration and Timing are also critical functions of a well run race. Non-skiing parents can volunteer for race office/race administration positions. The Race Administration course material can be found here. The Timing Course material (ignore the dates) can be found here.

These courses will be held together over a two day period October 31st and November 1st at the Percy Page building. To register for this course please email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
